David Patterson's CV >>

The Patterson laboratory is developing web-based resources and tools in support of education and research in areas of microbial diversity, evolution and ecology. Our activities include the micro*scope web site and Microbial Life - a digital library of educational resources for the National Science Digital Library program.  Our approach is to use the principles of taxonomy to assist in the discovery, organization and delivery of information about organisms. We work in collaboration with the uBio project in gathering names for indexing purposes, and in developing a taxonomic backbone, called CUSTAR, for micro*scope and related star web sites. We also create original content for teaching materials, and offer courses in microbial diversity for educators and others. Our laboratory has considerable expertise in the taxonomy of free-living protozoa, and has been involved in investigations into the geographic distribution of flagellates. We are active participants in the International Census of Marine Microbes.

We organize and run the fall Protistology workshop at the MBL.
